Catfish Basics #136—Shallow Mud Bottom by Roger Breedlove

Shallow Mud Bottom by Roger Breedlove

My association with Patriot Catfishing INC. gives me plenty of opportunities to put new catfish anglers on fish. I often search the waters of the Cumberland River and the Tennessee River to find some trophy cats for my veteran guests. It is just a way of giving back to those that have made so many sacrifices for us and our freedom.

To increase my odds of finding my vets some fish, I like to search for the warmest water I can find. It is a known fact that shallow water, and mud bottom, warm up the quickest so that is what I like to target in May. I especially like to fish shallow flats that are near deep water. Finding those conditions with a little structure of some kind in the transition between shallow water and deep is better yet.

If there is current, I will set up above the structure and cast back to it using a simple slip sinker rig. If that doesn’t work try pulling baits across the flats using your favorite dragging weight rig.

Add the freshest natural bait you can get and you will increase your odds of a hookup and the chance to create some smiles for your guests.
