Lots of Ways to Catch Catfish
June has always been my favorite month to catch sizeable catfish. For most parts of the country, the catfish spawn is on while in the Deep South, it is over for the most part. Either way, they are hungry. The really cool part of this, you can catch them on very unthinkable baits that you may want to try out yourself.
For the most part, if it is stinky, it will catch all species. Chicken livers are always a good bait but extremely messy. Stinkbaits for catfish are also very popular. I have also bought big frozen shrimp in grocery stores and caught big catfish on them.
Some baits are more natural, like crickets, worms, minnows, grubs, grasshoppers, etc. Depending on the size or type of water you are fishing, all will be productive, even for big fish.
But some ways may surprise you! For example, Sue and I pull a lot of Offshore Tackle Planer Boards using crankbaits, bladebaits and jigs. This technique is extremely effective. It will catch all catfish sizes and types in lakes, rivers, etc. Their favorite color almost everywhere is pink and sometimes orange.
In smaller ponds and lakes, I have caught a lot of catfish on 1/32-oz. Crappie Pro heads teamed with Bobby Garland Itty Bit bodies. I have caught them up to 8 pounds using this technique. The favorite colors, black and pink.
Lastly, I always heard you could catch a lot of catfish on hot dogs. I have proven this correct. I don’t put an entire hot dog on but instead cut it into chunks. Catfish love them.
So, the next time you plan to do a fishing trip for some catfish, know that there is a great assortment of baits you can use to make your trip successful.
