Kayak Fishing Contributes to Growth of Catfishing

One component of the growing sport of catfishing is kayak catfishing. Chasing the whisker fish in kayaks has become a recreational endeavor by some and a tournament fishing activity of others.

Some anglers start out in a kayak while others recognize the economy and excitement of kayak catfishing and make the move from big boat to a small vessel. Still other catfishers make the move from the shoreline to the kayak and the extended accessibility they offer.

The Trophy Catfish Kayak Anglers (TCKA) created by Ron Himmelhaver holds various tournaments with a championship in the fall. The tournaments are all catch, photo, release (CPR) with winners determined by total length of the fish caught. Himmelhaver has been pleased with the organization’s growth. “Our tournament entry numbers are steadily rising,” reported Himmelhaver. “And membership has started growing quickly. The price point to start catfishing from a kayak makes it more accessible for some and the excitement of it has really started drawing people from all walks of life. As membership grows the level of competition will grow and, hopefully, give some validation to what we do.”

CatfishNOW (CFN) is pleased to dedicate this month’s issue to the growing sport of kayak catfishing. This emerging sport is just one of many story angles to follow. If you know of a catfish story that needs to be told or a tip that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you.

As always, I wish to thank the great sponsors that support us. Because of them, we are able to offer the contents of CFN to our readers free of charge. I hope you will help thank them by considering them when you are in the market for catfishing supplies.

Fish with passion!
