Winter Fishing Fun By Keith “Catfish” Sutton

A boy and his father try their hand at ice fishing at Kenai National Wildlife Refuge
in Alaska. This is a fun winter activity parents can share with their children.

Winter Fishing Fun

By Keith “Catfish” Sutton

Keeping kids engaged when the weather turns cold.

Fishing with kids is one of the best ways to create lifelong memories, but what happens when winter rolls in and outdoor trips slow down? The fun doesn’t have to stop. Here are a few activities to keep your children excited about fishing, even during the cold months:

  1. Ice Fishing Adventure

If you live in an area where lakes freeze over, why not introduce your kids to the thrill of ice fishing? Bundle up, bring plenty of warm drinks and snacks, and let them experience the excitement of catfishing through the ice. It’s a unique way to fish that can bring its own sense of adventure and joy, even in the heart of winter.

  1. Knot-Tying Practice

Winter is a great time for kids to master the knots they’ll need for catfishing. Grab a few lengths of rope or spare fishing line and teach them basic knots like the improved clinch knot or the Palomar knot. You can even make it a game, seeing who can tie the fastest or best knot.

  1. Fishing Show Marathon

Settle in for a cozy day indoors by binge-watching some kid-friendly fishing shows or YouTube channels. Choose shows that teach new techniques, cover different types of catfish or showcase exciting fishing destinations. These can spark a sense of adventure and keep your little anglers inspired.

  1. Fish Species Scavenger Hunt

Create a fun educational scavenger hunt by giving your kids a list of catfish species to research. They can use fishing books or online resources to find out where those fish live, what they eat and what kind of bait works best. Reward them for completing the hunt with fishing-themed prizes like a new fishing cap or some hot cocoa.

  1. Virtual Fishing Games

If your kids love video games, introduce them to virtual fishing games. Many offer realistic fishing experiences that teach patience, strategy and the basics of angling. It can be a fun way to practice fishing techniques while staying warm indoors.

  1. Plan a Dream Fishing Trip

Get the excitement brewing by planning your next big fishing trip together. Look at maps, read articles about new fishing spots and have your kids research what catfish you’ll target when the weather warms up. Let them choose a few activities to include on the trip—whether it’s camping by the lake or cooking their catch over an open fire.

  1. Wintertime Fishing Trip Prep

Take advantage of winter downtime to make sure your gear is in top shape. Teach your kids how to check and replace fishing line, inspect reels and clean rods. Getting their hands on real equipment helps them learn responsibility and anticipation for the next outing.

  1. Fish-Themed Crafts

Keep the fishing spirit alive by making fish-themed arts and crafts. Help your kids draw or paint their favorite fish, or even create fish sculptures from clay. You could also make fun fish-shaped cookies or snacks to enjoy while you work.

  1. Tacklebox Organizing Party

Turn those snowy afternoons into a fun tacklebox clean-up day. Lay out all your gear, and let the kids help sort and organize lures, bobbers, hooks and more. It’s a perfect time to teach them about different types of equipment and what each piece is used for. Let them design their own “kid-approved” tacklebox for the next big catfishing trip.

These ideas will not only keep your children entertained during the colder months but will also deepen their love for fishing, helping them grow into lifelong anglers. And when spring rolls around, they’ll be more excited than ever to hit the water.
