Catfish Basics: Bank Fishing Smarter, Not Harder

By Keith “Catfish” Sutton

Bank fishing has a way of humbling you. You don’t have a trolling motor to reposition at will or electronics to tell you what’s below. What you do have is a limited stretch of shoreline and a decision to make—either fish it smart or fish it stubborn—sticking with a plan long after it’s stopped making sense.

Too many anglers choose the second option.

Catching catfish from the bank isn’t about luck or soaking bait the longest. It’s about understanding where fish are most likely to pass and putting your bait in those places as efficiently as possible.

Start with location. Not all bank access is equal. The best spots are those that intersect with natural travel routes—points that extend into the water, areas near creek mouths, outside bends of a river or places where current breaks against structure like riprap, logs or bridge pilings. These features funnel catfish into predictable paths, and that’s exactly what you’re looking for.

Once you’ve chosen a good area, think about your casting angles. Most bank anglers make the same cast over and over, straight out in front of them. That covers very little water. Instead, fan your casts—one close to the bank, one at mid-range and one as far as you can comfortably reach. If current is present, position baits both upstream and downstream to see where fish are holding.

Equally important is time. One of the biggest mistakes bank anglers make is waiting too long in unproductive water. Confidence is good, but stubbornness is not. If you’ve chosen your spot well and your bait is fresh, you should have a reasonable expectation of action. If 30 to 45 minutes pass without a bite, it’s often better to move than to hope.

That doesn’t mean running all over the lake. It means working methodically—giving each high-percentage spot a fair chance, then moving on. Think of it as covering water from the bank, just like a boat angler would.

Gear matters, but not as much as people think. You don’t need a truckload of rods or a complicated setup. A couple of well-placed rods with fresh bait will outfish a spread of neglected lines every time.

Pay attention to your bait, too. In warm weather, it doesn’t take long for cut-bait or prepared bait to lose its effectiveness. Check it often and replace it when needed.

In the end, successful bank fishing comes down to awareness. Watch the water. Look for subtle current seams, surface movement or changes in depth near the shoreline. These small details often point to bigger opportunities below.

Fish smarter, not harder. You may not be able to move the water, but you can always move yourself. And that’s usually the difference between a long, quiet night and a good story to tell on the way home.
