McClure and Arledge win Capt. Mad Jack’s Catfish Tournament

McClure and Arledge win Capt. Mad Jack’s Catfish Tournament

It was hard to find unders at Taylorsville tournament.

Season two of Capt. Mad Jack’s catfish tournament was held August 3 and 4, 2018 at Taylorsville Lake, KY. Billed as The Nocturnal Pursuit, the tournament ran through the night on Friday with weigh-in at 9:00 am on Saturday morning. Fifty-nine boats competed in the popular event.

The rod and reel tournament required anglers to launch from the Possum Ridge Boat Ramp. For safety reasons, boaters had to abide by a 35-mph speed limit after dark and until dawn. Angler teams were allowed to weigh-in five live catfish with only two blue cats or channel cats allowed over 25 inches. A complete list of rules can be viewed on the Mad Jack website.

Capt. Mad Jack’s creator, Steve Douglas, awarded the first place trophies to McClure and Arledge.

Kenny McClure and longtime fishing partner, Sean Arledge, put their catfishing skills to the test as they claimed the top spot at the tournament. Their biggest problem was catching fish that were not over the Taylorsville 25-inch slot. They ended up winning by taking only three fish to the scales.

“We fished the Original Clear Board planer boards all night,” reported McClure. “We had trouble finding fish under the slot limit. Every fish we caught, except for one, was over the 25-inch slot limit.”

“We baited with cut bluegill suspended 5 to 7 feet under the boards,” continued McClure. “We were pulling at .3 mph. We boated a total of 10 fish that had a combined weight of 189.6 pounds. The three fish we took to the scales weighed 70.4 pounds. Our biggest fish weighed 36 pounds and won Big Fish honors.”

“The weather was perfect,” concluded McClure. “We had no wind and clear skies. Capt. Mad Jack’s is a great tournament hosted by great people. This was my second-year fishing it and I can’t wait for next year.”
