Lindsey Brown of Gaffney, South Carolina loves the excitement and hard work that accompanies tournament catfishing. She and her husband Benji Brown won their first big tournament in 2024. But she’s learned to appreciate catfishing simply for fun when fishing with Benji and friends. Lindsey said the camaraderie of the catfishing community is amazing, and some of her best friends are now catfishermen and wives of catfishermen. She’s all in.  (Terry Madewell photo)

Celebrating Women in Catfishing

By Keith “Catfish” Sutton, Editor

As the editor of our beloved catfishing magazine, I’m thrilled to bring you an issue that dives deep into the heart of our angling community. This month, we cast a spotlight on some incredible women who are making waves in the world of catfishing.

First, we shine a light on Nicole Weber, Mary Casmey, Shannon Hartwig and Madi Estad who for several years have worked with writer, guide and tournament director Brad Durick behind the scenes at the some of the country’s top catfish tournaments. Brad explains how their organizational prowess and dedication ensure that these events run smoothly, providing a platform for anglers to showcase their talents and share their passion.

Next, we feature a special story about disabled women veterans and unique programs that bring them together for camaraderie and on-the-water fun. In this story by Anietra Hamper, you’ll read how boat owners, anglers, guides and others are stepping up to provide a safe and welcoming environment where these ladies can participate in outdoor activities like fishing, something many of the veterans have never had a chance to experience.

We also follow the journey of South Carolina tournament pro Lindsey Brown, a seasoned angler whose expertise and tenacity have earned her legendary status. Her story, told by Terry Madewell, is one of perseverance and love for the sport, showing us that skill and heart go hand in hand in the pursuit of the perfect catch.

These stories are not just about fishing; they are about breaking barriers, fostering community and celebrating the diversity that makes our sport so special. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to the world of catfishing, these women’s stories will inspire you to cast your line with renewed enthusiasm and pride.

Stay tuned and get ready to be inspired by the tales of these phenomenal female anglers. Their stories and the other articles in this issue are a testament to the fact that in the world of catfishing, the water is vast, the fish are plentiful, and the opportunities are endless.
