Evolving from a simple idea among friends, the ACA Catfish Challenge has mushroomed into a platform embraced by the catfishing community.
Last month, the American Catfishing Association, in collaboration with co-creators Alex Nagy, director of Twisted Cat Outdoors, along with co-creator and reigning ACA Catfish Challenge champion Bryan St. Ama, successfully hosted their highly anticipated second ACA Catfish Challenge event in Natchez, Mississippi on the Mississippi River. The live broadcast on the morning of December 23, 2023 captivated thousands of catfishing enthusiasts, reaffirming the ACA’s commitment to fostering a vibrant community of passionate anglers.
“After the inaugural ACA Catfish Challenge event, we all knew the concept had the potential to be a great opportunity to highlight catfishing and equally serve as an outlet to showcase sportsmanship, techniques, conservation and so much more,” said Nagy.
Following the conclusion of the inaugural ACA Catfish Challenge, the resounding enthusiasm for additional challenges quickly emerged. Without hesitation, Bryan St. Ama, victorious in the initial challenge, promptly issued a challenge to Captain Mike Mitchell who is known for his prowess as an accomplished captain, guide and one of the nation’s top tournament anglers. Mitchell swiftly embraced the opportunity, eagerly accepting the challenge.
“I felt honored and thrilled to accept this challenge,” said Mitchell. “Bryan is not only a skilled angler and competitor but also a respected figure in the catfishing community. The American Catfishing Association and the ACA Catfish Challenge play a crucial role in driving the sport’s overall growth, and I was genuinely excited to contribute to this significant endeavor.”
Although the outcome wasn’t what St Ama was aiming for, Mitchell once again showed he is tough to beat by pulling off a stunning and well-deserved victory with over 20 fish caught equating to more than 207 pounds.
While the ACA Catfish Challenge will maintain its presence as a live broadcast on social media, the ultimate goal is to transform the live footage into a dynamic 30-minute production for national broadcast distribution.
As the sport of catfishing continues it huge growth momentum, the ACA Catfish Challenge is poised to evolve into a prominent platform, spotlighting the excitement and elevating awareness of both the sport and species.
