Anglers spoke of a slow bite, no current and working hard to find fish. However the evidence at the weigh-in would suggest a pretty good bite. Lots of anglers were doing the right thing and catching good numbers of fish as is often the case when fishing the Ohio River out of Henderson, KY. Many anglers had their 5 fish limit at the weigh-in. That is often the nature of the first day of a two-day tournament. A reported slow bite, but plenty of fish caught.
Good weights came in all day long with the top five posting near 100 pounds ore more. A near 100 pound weight was offered by Scott Cress and Carl Crone. They weighed in 98.60 pounds to claim the fifth place spot after day one.
Aaron Wheatley and Rusty Morris were the first team to break the 100 pound mark. The Owensboro KY and Lawrenceville, IL team weighed a nice 5 fish limit at 112.42 pounds. They hold down the fourth position after day one. Their largest fish of the day was a 36.14 blue cat.
Larry King Jr. and Brian Queen had just enough to take the third place spot. The Ohio team weighed in a total weight of 114.62 pounds to claim the spot. Their total included a 61.88 pound bruiser which held on as big fish for a long part of the day.
The second position, after day one, is held by the ever present Masingale Catfishing team. Daryl and Jason are fresh off a win at the inaugural Mississippi River Monsters tournament out of Memphis on Sept. 9th. Today’s weight of 116.38 pounds was good to claim the second spot and leave them in a strong position for day two.
A big ole 77.18 pound Ohio River blue cat helped Carl Morris Jr. and Rob Parsons claim the first place spot after day one. Their 5 fish total weighed in at 137.16 pounds to put them in the drivers seat for day two while holding down the Big Kat honors too.
“We had a good day on the water,” said Morris. “It started off slow this morning, but we changed up what we were doing and they started biting. I think we know what we want for tomorrow, but we have learned over time that things change, day to day, a lot. We are prepared to do whatever we need to do tomorrow.”
“It was a good day,” chimed in Parsons. “We got one, we need two.”
With the expectation of similar river conditions and good weather, day two should be just as productive as the opening day. The weigh-in is open to the public and all are invited to attend. It begins about 3:00 at the Water Street Boat Ramp on Saturday September 24, 2016. Fishing actually ends at 3:00 and anglers must be in the weigh-in line by 4:00 PM.
