One of my favorite bites of the year is fishing shallow water in February. I look for daytime high temperatures that are warmer than the water temperature for multiple days in a row. The result is a warming of the shallow water.
Some of the shad tend to move up too soon because they are thinking the water is warming for spring. As a result the shad die because they can’t handle the water temperature swings from day to night.
The catfish take full advantage of the die-off and gorge themselves in between cold fronts. The end of February is by far the most fun and the best shallow water bite of the year!
