June is always a tough month to fish in. The spawn is taking full effect and I find the fish are scattered this time of the year. I spend most of my time drifting and covering water.
It is rare to find a big pile of fish in one spot during the spawn so covering a lot of ground is key. Dragging baits is the best method and planer boards will spread out the bait to cover even more ground.
The next thing is to go slower during the spawn. A speed of .03 to .05 mph is the max to try and entice a bite.
Try targeting relatively shallow water. Maybe the 15 to 25 feet range during the spawn. Alternatively, find shallow water with a deep water ledge later in the spawn and catch them as they are moving to summer holes.
Typically smaller bait works better during the spawn. The smaller bait seems to get more action than bigger bait until late summer. Once summer arrives, I throw the biggest bait I can!
