Catfish Basics #139—Channel Cat Fishing by Michelle Mock Jones

Photo of Shelly Jones holding a nice catfish

As a female angler in today’s world it’s sometimes hard to juggle life’s many responsibilities. Things like working, kids, relationships, and the list goes on. Now that the kids are out of school, you may be looking for fun things to do with them, or maybe you need to plan a family getaway, spend some quality time with someone special, or just some downtime for yourself. In any scenario, I have an inexpensive, easy, fun solution for you. You need to go channel cat fishing.

Now I know what you’re thinking—what’s the fun in that? I’m here to tell you, it’s just as much fun as catching the big species. It’s easy, it’s inexpensive, and they put up a great fight too. You can fish from the bank or you can fish from a boat, either way works.

Equipment

  • A rod with a fast tip
  • Boss Kat Dip Tube Rigs
  • G&S Cheesebait

Rigging/Baiting

The first thing you want to do is slide a no-roll sinker on your line and tie on a swivel. The weight of the sinker depends on the current you are fishing in so judge it accordingly. Next, you are going to tie your Boss Kat Dip Tube rig to the other end of the swivel. Now your rod is ready to go.

To prepare your tub of cheesebait mix it to a milkshake consistency. If it’s too soft, stir in flour. If it’s too thick, stir in vegetable oil.

To get the cheesebait in your tube, grab your line and lay your dip tube rig on the cheesebait. Hold the leader line with your thumb on the top edge of the tub and take the spoon in your other hand. Press the tube down into the tub with the spoon and keep folding the bait over the tube. You only have to do this a few times. Lift the leader line out and your tube will be full of bait.

Now you are ready to cast and wait for the fish to come. I hope these tips have helped you catch some nice channel cats. Good times and tight lines!
