Fishing the lower White River in Arkansas on a hot summer night produced this nice flathead for Josh Sutton. (Keith Sutton photo)

It’s summer and it is hot, hot, hot. Even at night it is sticky and warm here in the south. Given these conditions, it is appropriate that the August issue of CatfishNOW be themed—”In the Heat of the Night.”
The good news is that even with the summer heat, there is some great nighttime fishing available across the country. With that in mind, I want to share a few tips from my history of nighttime fishing:
1. Take plenty of bug spray. Mosquitos love the night and will love you too.
2. Bring along plenty of light. Critters can sneak up on you either on shore or in a boat and lights are needed for rigging, landing, and other activities.
3. Always use your running lights while on the water whether in motion or sitting on your favorite place. A couple of my friends were struck by another boat even with their lights on.
4. To compliment #3, have a horn handy to warn oncoming boats of your position.
5. Wear a life jacket at all times when boating and/or fishing at night. If you fall overboard, it becomes difficult to tell what is shoreline and how far away it is.
6. Tell a close friend or family member where you will be fishing so that if something were to happen, rescuers have a point of reference.
Night fishing in the summer can be very productive and a lot of fun. Monster catfish roam in the night and await those who chase them.
Be safe and take a child fishing.
God Bless and Good Fishing!
