Reelin’ for Leftie-Catfish and Cornhole Tournament
For the past few years, the Johnson family from Wichita, KS has been putting on a fundraiser or volunteer project in October during Brachial Plexus Awareness Week.
In 2016 their son Luke suffered a brachial plexus injury at birth. This injury results in paralysis of a nerve. For Luke, the injury affects his left arm. Since day one, Dustin and Naura Johnson have worked to rehab Luke, who they affectionately call “Leftie” because of the problem in his left arm.
“At 5 months old, Luke underwent a nerve graft at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City,” explained Naura Johnson, Leftie’s mom. “The procedure was aimed at helping to restore function. With daily exercises, multiple procedures, occupational therapy, ESTIM sessions, kinesio taping, and hard work, Leftie improves daily!”
The Johnsons work extremely hard to bring awareness to and raise money for Children’s Mercy Hospital and Brachial Plexus Awareness. They are currently working on an event in October at El Dorado State Park. The event is named Reelin’ for Leftie. The affair is a catfish and cornhole tournament, planned for October 24, 2020, at El Dorado State Park, KS.
“Luke and his dad share a passion of fishing together,” Naura said. “Fishing and the great outdoors have always been one of our top priorities. Our event will present a great opportunity for other friends and families to fish together while maintaining the perfect social distancing hobby. These annual events enable us to raise money for a cause so dear to our fisherman Luke!”
Last year’s fundraiser, Cookies for a Cause, raised $1000 and the Johnsons want this year’s event to do even better, and it can with just a little help. If the response is good the plans are to make this an annual tournament.
