Young Texas angler lands a blue cat bigger than he is.
Those of you who have had the experience of landing a blue catfish topping 50 pounds know that can be quite a task. These monsters fight like the dickens, often snapping line, burning drags and busting rods. But one big blue found itself unable to escape the fisherman who hooked it, even though that angler was just nine years old.
Our friends at the San Angelo District of Inland Fisheries (Texas Parks and Wildlife) tell us that on February 25 this year, nine-year-old Jaxon Yoakum landed a blue catfish that tipped the scales at 51-1/2 pounds. The 46-inch-long cat was caught in Twin Buttes Reservoir six miles southwest of San Angelo.
Young Yoakum has submitted the fish for the pending junior waterbody record. It should smash the previous Twin Buttes junior record of 8.95 pounds set back in 2021. Yoakum’s catch barely missed the overall Twin Buttes blue catfish record of 52-1/2 pounds established in 2002.
“Well done Jaxon!” officials wrote in a Facebook post. We second that. Congratulations, Jaxon, on a stellar catch.
