Want your kids to be smart, ethical anglers? Helping them complete the IGFA’s free online Learn to Fish course is a step in that direction.
Established in 1939, the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) is an international recreational fishing organization dedicated to the conservation of gamefish and the promotion of responsible, ethical angling practices through science, education, rule making, record keeping and recognition of outstanding accomplishments in the field of angling. The organization is approaching its 80th anniversary, and in recognition of that milestone, it has announced several key initiatives. One is to teach 100,000 youths to fish to help build the next generation of educated, ethical and accomplished anglers.
As part of this initiative, the organization has created a series of free online learning modules, starting with Intro to Fishing. This basic course is designed for youth and beginner anglers. The curriculum covers what fish are, where they live, how to catch them and how to do so responsibly.
Those who complete the course will receive a certificate of recognition from the IGFA. They will also get a promo code for a free, IGFA Digital Membership ($20 value) or $10 off an Individual Membership. These provide exclusive “Members Only” online access to the IGFA World Record database, how-to and historical videos, World Record Game Fishes archives, the monthly International Angler digital publication and discounts on tackle, trips, charters and more from IGFA partners. Participants can upgrade to an Individual Membership and receive the IGFA World Record Game Fishes book.
Now is a great time to get online with your kids and let them complete the Intro to Fishing course. They’ll learn about angling basics and safety, aquatic and marine biology, fish anatomy, environmental stewardship and more. The course will provide young or novice anglers with a strong foundation of angling knowledge in a comfortable, virtual setting that will give them the confidence to get out and go fishing in a responsible and ethical way.
