Spring Stockings Bring Big Catfishing Opportunities

Anglers in Texas and Arizona have reason to celebrate this spring as both states are kicking off catfish stocking programs that bring the action close to home.
In Texas, the Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has resumed stocking channel catfish every two weeks through October (excluding August) at 18 Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes across the state. These easily accessible waters are located in or near Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Amarillo, College Station, San Angelo, Waco and Wichita Falls. Youth under 17 fish free, while adults need a fishing license. Learn more at www.neighborhoodfishin.org or call 800-792-1112.
In Arizona, the Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is stocking over 100 tons of channel catfish in more than 50 Community Fishing Program waters this spring and fall. Lower elevation waters in Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma and Safford are being stocked through May, with higher elevations like Show Low and Prescott Valley receiving fish from late May through mid-September. Stocked fish typically weigh 1½ to 2 pounds, with some topping 5 pounds. A valid fishing license is required for anglers aged 10 and up. Visit www/azgfd/gov/community for details and stocking schedules, or call 602-942-3000.
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just getting started, these state-run urban fishing programs offer great chances to catch a mess of catfish and enjoy the outdoors this spring.
