A pair of whopper catfish have established new record-book benchmarks.
Incoming news reports this month tell of two impressive catfish that will establish new state- and world-record benchmarks.
Angela Dixon of Chidester, Arkansas set the brown bullhead bar higher in her home state with an incredible catch from 1,645-acre Lower White Oak Lake. She reeled in the 3-pound, 9-ounce fish (a monster for the species) on February 9 of this year. The previous Arkansas-record brown bullhead was 3 pounds, 3 ounces and was caught at nearby Upper White Oak Lake in 2013. Dixon caught the new record using a minnow for bait.
International Game Fish Association (IGFA) Fishing Hall of Famer Roberta Arostegui was fishing with her son and fellow IGFA World Record aficionado, Dr. Martini Arostegui, on November 25, 2023, when she landed a 37-pound, 8-ounce blue catfish. This record cat struck cut-bait while they were fishing in the Virginia portion of the Potomac River and was landed after a 15-minute fight. Once landed, Roberta and Martini quickly weighed and documented the catch before releasing it safely. With this catch, Roberta set the IGFA Women’s 12-pound Line Class World Record for blue catfish.
