Young Anglers: Ready to Catch a Big Cat?
Source: Alabama Wildlife Federation
August is National Catfish Month, and young anglers in Alabama have a chance to prove their fishing skills in the Big Cat Youth Fishing Tournament hosted by the Alabama Wildlife Federation.
The tournament takes place Saturday, August 29, 2026, at the Alabama Nature Center, 3050 Lanark Road in Millbrook.
If you’re between 6 and 15 years old, this is your chance to compete for bragging rights and prizes by catching the biggest catfish. The tournament begins at 7:00 a.m., and anglers can weigh in their largest fish every hour beginning at 8:00 a.m. The final weigh-in is at 11:45 a.m., so every cast could land a winner.
Registration costs $30 per angler, and entries are for individual anglers only—no teams. The field is limited to the first 50 anglers, so don’t wait too long to sign up.
One important reminder: Every participant must attend the mandatory anglers meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, at the NaturePlex facility at the Alabama Nature Center. Anglers who miss the meeting won’t be allowed to fish in the tournament.
Whether you’re an experienced catfish angler or hoping to catch your first whiskered giant, this tournament is a fun way to celebrate National Catfish Month, meet other young fishermen and make memories that will last long after the last fish is weighed.
